The "Eroica Variations"---so-called because they were later re-worked for the finale of Beethoven's third ("Eroica") Symphony, Op. 55---occupy a prominent place in piano literature. Its structural grandeur and the originality and beauty of its piano writing set this work apart. The technical demands are considerable, on par with many other works from Beethoven's middle period. A brilliant finger technique is called for, and often the demands for speed and volume coincide. This edition, edited by Charles Timbrell, is based on the autograph, which served as the source-score for the first edition.

While this canon may sound quite serious, it was written in friendly jest for Beethoven's friend, Abbé Stadler, a priest. The first two phrases are written in Italian to signify the relationship of the text to the church in Rome. The last phrase, in the vernacular, is a good-natured chastisement and threat! (2:00)

Beethoven wrote several works for mandolin and piano for Countess Josephine of Clary-Aldringen, who played the mandolin. Four of these works are still extant and have been arranged by Julius Berger for cello and piano.

There are probably very few piano students who have not tried their hand at this piece; it is undeniably one of the most popular classical piano pieces today. And yet unanswered questions still remain. They not only concern details in the musical text but also its famous nickname: Is Elise, the reading in the dedication in the autograph, even actually correct? Or should it read Therese? And whom might Beethoven have actually meant? The most recent findings with regard to these questions are documented in this Henle Urtext edition. The revised musical text is now being published in advance of the long-awaited volume Piano Pieces in the Complete Edition, prepared by the Beethoven scholar Joanna Cobb Biermann.
